✨ Malcolm Saunders @ The Light Cellar ✨

Meet Malcolm Saunders, the visionary behind The Light Cellar, a local superfood haven nestled on Main Street in Bowness, Calgary, Alberta.

The Light Cellar Interview

The Light Cellar is a place where you can go to find the type of thing that not every grocery store will have; a food so tasty that you just can’t believe it doesn’t have sugar! A tea for one ailment, a herb for another. An alternative to the regular pantry. A more traditional approach to health and wellness where you can not only purchase remedies for ailments but also learn about how to craft your own medicines and share them with the world. A place where you leave feeling not just nourished by food but wrapped in a hug of light, love and community.

✨ Pure Magic ✨

From the moment I stepped foot into The Light Cellar, I knew I had found something unique. There were many things that I wasn’t familiar with on the shelves, but it wasn’t too long after my first visit that I realized I had found my home away from home. As my personal food and health journey progressed I learned that I could find a lot of the things I was searching for at The Light Cellar, that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I very quickly became an avid fan. After visiting more often, I soon realized that it was taking a hefty chunk out of my pocket. Alternative health isn’t cheap! This led me to discover that they also offered workshops that could teach me some of the skills needed to create my own medicines and start my journey toward becoming more self-sustainable in my health. Not only did The Light Cellar start to become a place of health, wellness and knowledge for me but over the years I realized that I had found my people. Trying to navigate food sensitivities in a world that is overrun by the Standard American Diet (SAD) is so hard. And lonely. I believe that The Light Cellar provides society with an alternative to mainstream options around health and wellness. Not only do they equip you with the knowledge needed to sustain these alternative life choices but they welcome you in a way that makes you feel like family. They create a space that is inviting, nourishing and educating! They create a living community.

Recently, my mum and I visited The Light Cellar to take a course on how to become your own chocolate maker. I got to hone in on some problems I was having crafting chocolate at home and my mum learned some tips and tricks around being a diabetic and loving chocolate. We also got to enjoy their 2024 submission into the YYC Hot Chocolate Fest, Holy CaCow, an annual city-wide event that raises over $100,000 to help combat food-insecurity in our city. A visit to the Light Cellar always fills my heart and soul and helps me to become more creative and imaginative in my kitchen ❤️

In making my final choice between the two people I wanted to interview, knowing how Malcolm ran his business ended up being the deciding factor for me. Malcolm cultivates a work environment that employees are excited to come to. You can feel the energy when you walk in the door- calm, collected and connected! Each staff member is welcoming and knowledgeable, bringing their own unique spin to the health benefits of what you're sourcing that day and their own unique connection to the food. I always learn something new when I visit. Malcolm is not just building a business; he's cultivating an environment that educates and uplifts. It's more than just a transaction for customers and a paycheck for employees, it's a space for personal growth and societal connections. Like most entrepreneurs, Malcolm strives to create a business that aligns with his values. At The Light Cellar employees are on a personal learning journey, crafting after hours and gathering knowledge towards future lines of work. The Light Cellar provides an environment in which employees flourish professionally and personally.

I believe Malcolm has crafted a space that contributes to a very complex problem that exists in our world; self-sustainability around food, for the good of self and the good of all. The Light Cellar is a space that not only pertains to sourcing and crafting medicines respectfully but is a space where relationships are made, talents are shared, and community is built. A special place, a hidden gem in a big city, where people can come to better themselves and in turn better the lives of those around them. A place I think every person deserves to have in their life. A place that allows all to shine their light on others!

✨A truly magical place ✨
